Nicolas Gendron-Lafontaine was born around 1634 in La Rochelle, France. Son of Pierre Gendron and Marie Renaud, he married Marie-Marthe Hubert, daughter of Toussaint and Catherine Champagne, on February 14th, 1656 in Quebec City. From this union were born six children. This butcher first settled in Quebec and Sainte-Famille, Île d'Orléans. The rape of his wife by a Native American in 1664, is behind a decision of the Sovereign Council, which stated that from that day the Native Americans who commit crimes will be subject to the same penalties as the French. He died January 16, 1671 in Sainte-Famille.

Gendron-Lafontaine - Gendron is the short word for son, the husband of the daughter. Lafontaine is a war nickname. This nickname was given to a soldier on his arrival at the regiment. It was then transmitted to descendants. Refers to one who lives near a fountain, or who is from a locality or village with that name.
