Virginia Mae (Cole) Freeman, 87, Springfield, passed away Sunday evening, October 1, 2006, in Cox South. She was born August 28, 1919, in Alpha, Illinois, the daughter of Robert and Edna Pearson Cole. Her mother died when she was very young and she was raised by her loving stepmother, Dorothy Penman Cole. Virginia spent many years teaching elementary school. Due to her husband's military career, she taught in several school districts. She was a member of National Avenue Christian Church where she was an honorary life deacon and was very active in the church, especially the Christian Women's Fellowship. She valued her friendships gained at National Avenue. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carol John Freeman; and a daughter, Mary Virginia Freeman. Virginia is survived by her daughter, Carol Lynne Freeman. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 6, 2006, in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. A private family burial will take place at a later date in Springfield National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to National Avenue Christian Church or the Developmental Center of the Ozarks.
