Obituary of Leo-James Nadeau


NADEAU Leo James Nadeau, age 71, of Hunter Court, Torrington, died Thursday, December 15, 2005, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. He was the beloved husband of Patricia R. (Harris) Nadeau. Born July 8, 1934, in Caribou, Maine, he was the son of the late Ernest and Claire (Cormier) Nadeau. He was employed by the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation working with the bridge crew until his retirement in 1997. Leo was a proud Marine combat veteran of the Korean War, having served as a squad leader assigned to the First Marine Expeditionary Forces, Infantry, Republic of Korea. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 18, 1951, just ten days after his seventeenth birthday. Upon completion of his basic military training as a rifleman and 30 caliber machine gun crewman, he was shipped to Korea where he served three combat tours of duty. He participated in the fall, winter and spring campaigns of 1952 to 1953. His awards and decorations included the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars, Republic of Korea War Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Sharpshooters Rifle Badge. He was at the time of his death, a sergeant squad leader in the U.S. Marine Unit of the Connecticut State Guard Reserve Military Final Hours Squads of Northwest Connection and had assisted providing hours to more than 1,500 veterans at their grave sites and memorial services. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Marine Corps League, the AmVets, the Veteran1s Action Committee, the Final Honors Squad, was the founder of the "Veterans View," a television show on Cable five and was a also a Chaplin for the Final Honors Squad. In addition to his wife Pat, he is survived by six daughters, Valerie Bleau of College Park, Md., Catherine Halica of Bridgeport, Maureen Bandanza of Oxford, Michele Nucera of Ellington, Dawn Caldwell of Yardley, Pa., and Ruth Nadeau of Torrington; one sister, Theresa Pendley and brother-in-law, James, of Abeline, Texas; six grandchildren, Sarah Bandanza-Lipps, Michael Bandanza Jr., Bo James Bandanza, Scott Nadeau, Ryan Caldwell, Daniel Caldwell; as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at 8 a.m. from The LaPorta-Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield Street, Torrington, to St. Francis Church, Main Street, Torrington, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family in the Veterans Cemetery in Middletown. Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 19, 2005 from 4 to 8 p.m. at The LaPorta-Cook Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial contributions be made to the Final Honors Squad, c/o Veterans Service Office, 140 Main Street, Torrington, Connecticut 06790.
