Sarah Virginia Jackson Thomas of Athens, Georgia, age 84, passed away on January 17, 2014 after a brief illness. Born January 30, 1929 in Sebring, Florida, she was the daughter of Nathaniel Burke Jackson and Ruby Ione Rivers Jackson. She was a graduate of Sebring High School and Florida State University in 1950 with a B.S. in Social Work. While attending FSU, she met Gerald, and they were married in 1952. She moved to Athens to help Gerald establish his optometric practice. Sarah was Gerald's biggest supporter in his practice and his work in state and national optometry offices. She loved to travel to meetings with him. She also supported Gerald in the Lions Club, Shrine Club, and Masons. Faith, family, and friends were the cornerstones of her life. Sarah was a beloved mother and grandmother. She was most proud of her three children, seeing each one graduate from college and be happily married, and her three beautiful granddaughters, who called her Sai-Sai. Sarah was best known for her wonderful sense of humor and her hospitality, with a gift for making everyone feel welcome. She was a Life Master Duplicate Bridge player, one of the best in Athens. She graced Gerald's office and friends with her beautiful roses, tending to over 80 bushes at one time. She also enjoyed UGA football and reading, loving her Kindle the last few years. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. Sarah was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Andrew Betts Jackson. She is survived by her loving husband, Gerald Monroe Thomas, Sr., son Gerald (Jerry) Monroe Thomas, Jr. and wife Gail, of Savannah, GA; daughter Suzanne (Sue) Thomas Townsend, and husband Whit, of Hartselle, AL; and son Stuart Jackson Thomas, and wife Sharon, of Athens, GA; granddaughters Paige Holden Thomas, of Long Beach, CA, Amelia Diane Thomas, of Savannah, GA, and Mary Stuart Thomas, of Athens, GA; sister Patricia (Pat) Ione Jackson Lukens, and husband Sam, of Littleton, CO; sister-in-law, Ida Dorman Jackson, of Sebring, FL; several nieces and nephews, and long-time friend and caregiver, Emma Teasley. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Georgia Optometric Foundation, 400 West Peachtree NW, Suite201, Atlanta, GA 30308, or Central Presbyterian Church, 380 Alps Rd, Athens, GA 30606.Services will be held at Central Presbyterian Church on Monday, January 20, 2014, at 2:00 PM, with a reception following.
