1930-2013 OAKLAND - Richard Romeo "Dick" Bolduc died peacefully on Dec. 23, 2013, in Oakland, in the East Pond home he loved, following a long struggle with muscular dystrophy. He was 83. Dick was born in Waterville on Oct. 3, 1930, to Simeon and Lydia (Veilleux) Bolduc, the youngest of four children. After attending parochial schools, he graduated from Waterville High School in 1949 and worked at a local dry cleaners. During this time, he met the love of his life, Theresa (Liberty). Dick and Terri married on March 12, 1951, and the two were together for the next 57 years. Dick enlisted in the Navy in 1950 and was stationed in Jacksonville, Fla., with an overseas tour on board the USS Bennington. Following his military tour of duty, Dick and Terri returned to Maine to work and raise a family, first in Waterville, then Greenville. During this time, Dick worked as a meat cutter for A&P Supermarket. Dick and Terri were active members of St. Francis Church and were surrounded by many close family and friends. Dick enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and brothers-in-law, snowmobiling and spending time with family. In 1975, five years after their fourth child was born, Dick and Terri purchased Bolduc's Superette on the Smithfield Road in Oakland. They operated the store for nearly 20 years. Regular customers will remember the long hours and friendly atmosphere of Bolduc's Superette. Though Dick and Terri worked seven days a week, closing only at Christmas, they took great pride and satisfaction in having their own business and interacting with their community. They built their dream home on East Pond and spent their remaining years together following their retirement. Whether entertaining family and friends on their deck, gardening, swimming, fishing, skating or snowmobiling, they truly loved living on the lake. During this time, Dick worked as a security guard and as a caller for bingo nights at the local Veterans of Foreign Wars. He became active in the Knights of Columbus, and Dick and Terri had many great times with fellow Knights. Dick's battle with muscular dystrophy took a toll on his mobility in recent years, but he remained determined to make the best of it, even after the death of his beloved Terri in 2008. He was a big New England sports fan and watched nearly every Patriots and Red Sox game. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up. He rarely missed a sunset. Dick was eternally grateful for the excellent care and companionship he received from private care providers, Cindy, Sue V., Cheryl, Rachel and Adeba. Thanks to their efforts and thanks to daily help from his son and neighbor Alan and from Sue R., Dick was able to remain at home until his passing. Dick is predeceased by his wife, Terri; parents, Simeone and Lydia Bolduc; brother Roland Bolduc; and sisters Fern Labbe and Jean Gallant; and grandson Jackson Bolduc. He is survived by his daughter, Lydia Bolduc Marden (husband Bob and children Brad and Sadie), sons Dan (wife Wendy and daughter Holly), Alan (daughter Carlie) and Bill (wife Mio and children Joel and Jasmin). He is also survived by great-grandson Kadin Caret and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of remembrance and a burial will be arranged at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dick's honor may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Association or MaineGeneral Hospice. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville, ME 04901; www.veilleuxfuneralhome.com.
