Athens - William Lee Woodcock Peters, 77, died suddenly on July 8, 2009. Bill was the son of the Reverend Canon Sydney Ralph Peters and Eleanor Lee Woodcock Peters. He was born in London, England and held dual citizenship. He is survived by his wife Sarah Mullins Peters; daughters, Cynthia Lee Peters Maddox and her husband Sam and Deirdre Elizabeth Peters; sister, Elizabeth Peters Turner; nephew, Douglas Woodcock Teague; niece Elizabeth Teague Thompson and her husband Stephen and their children, brothers in law, Andrew Timberman Mullins and Michael Andrew Mullins and his wife Carol; nephew, Trevor Mullins and his wife Brenda, and niece, Michelle Omer and her husband Orhan and their children.A graduate of Kent School, he received his BS and MA from Cornell School of Engineering. After graduating from Cornell, he was commissioned 1st Lieutenant in the US Air Force where he flew B-25s. After leaving the Air Force he held several positions in the engineering field. He later returned to school earning a MS in Education from the University of Georgia. He taught math for many years, first at Madison County High School then Oconee County High School. He was twice named Star Teacher of the Year. Bill helped to start the lacrosse program at UGA and coached the team.Bill was a faithful member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, helped to found St. Gregory The Great Episcopal Church, and was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. An active volunteer after his retirement, he spent many hours helping at ARMC and the Georgia Unit of Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. Bill was a longtime member of Athens Area Kiwanis club serving as both chapter president and Lt. Governor for the State of Georgia for the organization, and was a delegate to 20 international Kiwanis conventions.A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with Father Robert Salamone officiating.In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 498 Prince Ave, Athens, GA 30606 or the Georgia Unit of Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, 120 Florida Ave., Athens, GA 30605.Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. www.bernsteinfuneralhome.com.
