Ruth Anne Johnson Smith, 74, of 113 Summit Hills Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.A wife, mother, teacher, pianist, organist, and librarian, she was married to James Ayers Smith Sr. for 52 years. She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church.She was born in Charleston, S.C., to the late Dr. George Andrew and Ruth Estelle Smoak Johnson on July 17, 1931. After attending Ashley Hall in Charleston, she graduated from the Converse College School of Music with a major in Organ and Music Education. She also studied at the Boston University Organ Institute in Andover, Mass. After earning her Master's degree in 1983, from the Davis College of Library Science of the University of South Carolina, she worked at the Sandor Tezler Library at Wofford College, was Director of the Eastwood Library at Limestone College, Public Service Librarian at Gardner Webb University, and retired as Director of the Library at Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic. She also worked at the Spartanburg County Public Library. Ruth Anne served as organist at First Baptist Church of Union, Westminster Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, and assistant organist at Saint Luke's United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ga., and as Children's Choir Director at Mon Aetna Baptist Church in Union and Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg, and taught kindergarten music at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Smith was a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Spartanburg Philharmonic Music Club. Ruth Ann was a charter member of the Pinckney District Chapter of S.C. Genealogical Society. She was also a former president of the Summit Hills Ladies Luncheon.Survivors, in addition to her husband, are two sons and daughters-in-law, James Ayers Smith Jr. and Susan Elwell Smith of Charlotte, N.C., SFC Walter Andrew Smith and Rosalyn Smith Smith of Harker Heights, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Elizabeth Smith Fike and Robert Leedham Fike of Springfield, Va.; and two grandchildren, Melissa Anne and Stephen Wesley Fike, also of Springfield, Va. She is survived by three special cousins, Charlotte Elizabeth Smoak Shackelford of Newberry, S.C., William Thomas Maynard of Spartanburg, and Mary Florence Shelley Puckett of Charlotte, N.C.; and a very special friend, Ursula Salvo Kaiser of Mount Pleasant, S.C.The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today, Nov. 19, 2005, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.
