Ruth Marguerite Appleton Harrington, 76, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and of Greenville, S.C., died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto.Born on May 22, 1928, to the late Emma Beam and Franklin R. Appleton, Mrs. Harrington grew up in Toronto near Riverdale Park. She married in Churchill, Manitoba, in 1946, and spent the next year in a remote outpost inside the Arctic Circle in northern Canada, where weather research was being conducted. After living in the town of Arctic Bay in the Northwest Territories (now known as Nunavut) for the next several years, she returned to her native Toronto and began working for the law firm of McCarthy and McCarthy. In 1966, she moved to Burbank, Calif., to work for Walt Disney Studios. After two years in California, she returned again to Toronto and began working for the law firm of Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt, where she worked until her retirement.During her life, she spent much time in Greenville, where she maintained a condominium at Lewis Village so she could be with her family and enjoy warmer winters. She also enjoyed vacations at Kiawah Island in South Carolina, which she claimed was one of the most beautiful places in the world.Mrs. Harrington was the last surviving member among her brothers, Kenneth Appleton and Keith Appleton, both of Toronto, and sister, Hilda Mullen, of Greenville. She was also predeceased by a nephew, Ralph Appleton of Toronto.She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Richard Few Jr. of Greenville, S.C.; and grandchildren, Suzanne and Tony Lynn of Gastonia, N.C., Marianne and Buddy Clay of Greenville, S.C., and Emily Few and Chris Mann of Alcester, England. She is also survived by nieces, Dianne Spring and her husband, Vic, and their sons, of Kinmount, Ontario, Canada, Arlene Ouimette and her husband, Marcel, and their daughters, of Barrie, Ontario, Canada, Bonnie Appleton of Toronto, Kim Appleton and her daughter of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, and Susan Royston and her husband, Buddy, and their sons, of Bell Buckle, Tenn.; and a nephew, Kevin Mullen, and his wife, Susan, of Greenville, S.C. In addition, she is survived by a very special nephew, Ron Appleton, and his companion, Isabel Aaron, of Markham, Ontario, Canada, whose loving care, attention and humor meant so much to her. She is also survived by a dear sister-in-law, Elsie Appleton Wheeler of Toronto.Surviving also are dear friends, Susan and Brian Sweeney, and their daughters, Donna and Nancy, and their families, as well as David Alves, all of Toronto, all of whom Ruth considered to be family, and who were always so generous with their time and attention. Also special to Ruth was the entire staff at the Augusta Grill, Greenville, S.C., who always made her feel that she was at her home away from home.The family will conduct private memorial services. Memorials may be made to the Toronto Humane Society, 11 River St., Toronto, Ontario, Canada MSA 4C2; to the Greenville Humane Society, 328 Furman Hall Road, Greenville, SC 29609; or to a charity of one's choice.
