HOOK Ruth Alden (nee Williams), 84, died Monday June 21, 2010 at her home in Franklin Lakes. Born in Des Moines, Iowa to Rev. Gowan C. Williams and Ruth Alden Hoyt Williams, Ruth was raised in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and was a registered nurse in Chicago until her marriage to A. Edward Hook in 1954 when they moved to New Jersey, settling in Franklin Lakes in 1958. Ruth trained as a nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago, and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing Education at the University of Indiana. In her later years she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Literature at Ramapo College. She was active in all aspects of Church life, particularly at Christ Church in Ridgewood and the Episcopal Diocese of Newark where among other things she was a vestry member, Women's Guild President, lay reader and Eucharistic minister, Vice President of Episcopal Church Women and Chairwoman of the United Thank Offering. Ruth was a docent at the Hermitage in Ho-Ho-Kus for 35 years, an active member of the Ridgewood College Club, and former member of the Franklin Lakes Women's Club. She is also a lifelong member of the Alden Kindred of America, Duxbury, Mass. She is survived by her husband, daughter Ruth Alden Hook Re, son Paul Williams Hook, son-in-law Richard Re, grandson Nicolas Re, granddaughter Ruth Alden (Allie) Re, and Grace Anne Re, and a sister Mary Eleanor Lindsay of Pacific Grove, CA. A son, David Walton Hook, and two brothers, Rev. Gowan H. Williams and Arthur L. Williams predeceased her. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church in Ridgewood, located on Franklin Avenue at Cottage Place, Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at 2 PM followed by a reception. There will be no visitation prior to the service. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. Ruth requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Convent of the Transfiguration, 495 Albion Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45426 for their work in the Dominican Republic, or to a charity of your choice.
