CHOQUETTE, RonaldWe are saddened to announce that Ronald Choquette, of Regina, died on Saturday, January 10, 2015. The fourth of eight children, Ron was born on September 29, 1926, in Montreal. Shortly after his birth, his mother Louise returned with Ron to Wawota, Saskatchewan, where his father Peter owned and operated a hardware store. As a child of the Great Depression, Ron's early years were difficult. At around age 5, his family sent him to live with a special Aunt in Montreal, a time in his life that he often spoke fondly of. After a few years he returned to his family in Wawota but at the age of 10 he left home for good, first living in the care of a Catholic orphanage and then by 13 on his own, working full time to support himself. The challenges of his childhood did not embitter Ron, instead it gave him the determination that with the love and support of his wife Louilla, resulted in success both as an entrepreneur and elected official, serving as a member of the school board and a multi term Mayor of Wawota. In 1986, Ron and Louilla retired and moved to Regina. An avid fisherman, enthusiastic crib player, and master puzzler, Ron also enjoyed an occasional trip to the Casino and loved watching sports on TV, particularly if the Montreal Canadiens or the Saskatchewan Roughriders were playing. Ron will be lovingly remembered by his seven children: Brad, Kevin, Heather, Philip (Candice), Dianne (Stewart) Hanlon, Blair (Christa) and Treena (Richard) Roos as well as 21 grandchildren, and two sisters, Aurelia and Yvonne. Family and friends will be gathering in July to remember and Celebrate Ron's Life. He will be interred at that time alongside his beloved wife, who predeceased him in 2009 after nearly 60 years of marriage. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
