Robert B. Johnson, 88 FALMOUTH -- Robert B. Johnson, 88, died surrounded by his family on Sept. 24, 2008 at Maine Medical Center as a result of complications from a fall at his home in May. A long time resident of Falmouth, South Portland and Kennebunk, Mr. Johnson was born in Hollywood, Calif. on Nov. 13, 1919 to George X. and Metta McDaniels Johnson and was raised in Carlsbad, Calif. and Las Vegas, Nevada. Following high school, he worked as a ranch-hand before joining the Army Corps of Engineers where he served in Central and South America before joining the infantry and then being assigned to the European theatre. He served in the 8th Armored Division in which he rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. His command received a unit citation and other honors for exemplary service in the defense of the strategic crossroad of St Vith during the Battle of the Bulge. Following his discharge from the service, Mr. Johnson attended Northeastern University and graduated with a BS in chemical engineering from McGill University. Mr. Johnson had a rich and accomplished engineering and research career in which he was at the forefront of many innovations in polymer chemistry that are now part of our everyday lives. He is named on many patents for improvements in processes for home and technical products, such as counter tops, wall and floor coverings as well as paper coatings. During his career, he was employed by Olin Corporation, Formica Corporation, Standard Coated Paper and American Cyanamid and from 1973 until his retirement in 1987 at S.D. Warren Paper in Westbrook where he held the title of Senior Scientist. He spent his retirement years with his family, pursuing his interests in genealogy, stamp collecting and history and his passion for swimming. He was a member of the Hiram Masonic Lodge in South Portland. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of thirty years ,Donna Woodworth Johnson of Falmouth; daughter, Angela Clark of Freeport and stepson Michael Gilbert of Boulder, Colo., and also two sons from his previous marriage to the late Edna B. Johnson, Dr. Steven G. Johnson of Kennebunkport and St Simons Island, Ga. and Gregory R. Johnson of North Haven, Conn. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marsha Lewis of Albany, Ore. A Celebration of his Life will be held at Falmouth Congregational Church, UCC on Monday, Sept. 29 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Dr. Dawn Berry will officiate. Arrangements are by Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham.
