Rene Denis December 4, 1920 - January 23, 2009 Uncasville - Rene Denis, 88, of Jewett City and Weedon, P.Q. Canada, beloved husband of 64 years to the late Mercedes (Tardif) Denis, died Friday Jan. 23, 2009, at his daughter's home surrounded by his loving family. He was born Dec. 4, 1920 in Fontainbleau, Canada, son of the late Joseph and Corinne (Robert) Denis. On Sept. 6, 1941 he was married to Mercedes Tardif in Weedon, Canada. He played semi-pro hockey while he lived in Canada and served in the Canadian Army during World War II. In 1954, he moved his family to the United States and returned to Canada as often as he could, and spent most of his retirement years there. As a young man he worked in his father's saw mill and developed a love for woodworking and became a master cabinet maker. He is survived by his children Nicole Shlevin, Jean (John) Denis and his wife Deanna, Danielle Kaminski and Stanley Taylor, Carolle Kozlowski-Allard and her husband Bill, two sisters Isabelle and Madeleine, eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was extremely proud of all of them. The funeral will assemble Tuesday at 9 AM at the Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home, 490 Voluntown Rd. Rt. 138 Jewett City. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 AM at St. Mary Church, Jewett City. Interment will be held at a later date in Weedon, Canada. Calling hours are Monday 7 to 9 PM.
