->Peggy Irene SmithPoughkeepsie - Peggy Irene Smith, age 89, of Poughkeepsie, died Thursday, March 8, 2012 at the Lutheran Care Center of Poughkeepsie, NY.. Mrs. Smith was born June 9, 1922, in Cleethorpes, England, the daughter of the late Lt/Cdr James and the late Nessie (Coxon) Hubbard. She married Sergeant Frederick Briggs in 1940 and lost him to war in 1944. At the end of WW2 she met and married a Royal Air Force veteran Albert Richard Stanley Smith on May 2, 1946. Stanley predeceased her in 1996.Peggy served in the Civil Nursing Reserve until the birth of her first child during WW2. She emigrated to Canada in 1956 with her husband Stanley and their, now, four children and they went on to move to the US in 1964, first to Bethpage and later to Poughkeepsie. Love never being in short supply, their family grew by one more with the adoption of another child. During her lifetime she worked as a manager of various small businesses in Canada and the US but was last fully employed by Fabric Garden, Long Island, as Sales Manager. During the couple's Florida retirement she served her retirement community for 2 years as President of the Social Club and one year on the Homeowners Association. Death of Stanley and loss of health necessitated a move back to Poughkeepsie to be close to family. She fully embraced her lot, living a long productive life but finally sucumbed with patient Grace to to the Lord's calling.She is suvived by: Ralph Smith and his partner Sherry Governale of Coram, NY; Son and Daughter In-law, David and Barbara Briggs of Ottawa, Canada; Daughter and Son In-law, Wendy and Stephen Ledrich of Poughkeepsie, NY; Daughter and Son In-law, Linda and Jerry Terwilliger of Poughkeepsie, NY; Daughter and Son In-law, Joan And Mark Knecht of Ashburn, VA; Grandchildren, Stephanie, Shelley, Jason, Amanda, Patrick, Bryan, Bethany, Jerry and Jason.Great Grandchildren; Tori, Paige, Kaylie, Samantha, Meghan and Christopher.Calling hours will be Tuesday, March 13 from 6pm to 8pm at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY.
