-> Hilton Head Island - Patricia W. Smith, 83, died Sunday, February 1, 2004 at Hilton Head Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Smith was born on November 13, 1920, in Seattle, WA to the late Claude Richard Wright and Nellie Newland Wright. She was a graduate of the University of Oregon, where she was President of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. During World War II, she worked for the Department of the Navy at Pearl Harbor in Classified Communications. In July of 1945, she married Edward P. Smith who, as a graduate of West Point, was an officer in the Regular Army. They had nine assignments on the East Coast, lived in Japan and in Naples, Italy (NATO). During her 27 years as an Army wife, she was very involved in the activities of each post. In addition, she became an active Braille transcriber. They bought property in Sea Pines in 1964, and moved to Hilton Head in 1972. They were charter members of the original Sea Pines Plantation Club, and Bear Creek Golf Club. She was President of Ketch Court Regime II for ten years. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church where she was chairman of the Tour of Homes in 1977, on the original columbarium committee and active with the Altar Guild for over 20 years. She was a volunteer with the Heritage Golf Classic for several years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-laws, Kathleen S. and Thomas E. Donnelly of Hilton Head and Pamela S. and Thomas J. Bilton of Columbia, SC; and one granddaughter, Megan Patricia Bilton of Columbia, SC. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Greg Kronz officiating. A reception will be held in the church hall following the service. Interment will be in Beaufort National Cemetery.
