Obituary of Nellie-Louise-Elam Smith


AIKEN, S.C. - Nellie Louise Elam Smith, 55, of Capella Dr. SW died Wednesday October 8, 2003. A memorial service will be held Monday, October 13, 2003 at 4 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church. The Reverends Dr. David Cozad and Martha Ebel will officiate. The family will receive friends in the church parlor follow the service. Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Roscoe A. Elam and Jean Lewis Elam and was born in Hyden, Kentucky. In addition to her mother, Mrs. Smith is survived by four sisters, Mary Rodriquez of Mapleglen, Pa.; Sarah Elam of Hyden, Ky.; Ellen Pittman of Mesa, Ariz.; and Ina Sue Osborne of Trenton, Ohio. Mrs. Smith was a retired librarian from Midland Valley High School. She completed her undergraduate work at Maryville College and earned her Masters Degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan. She was a former librarian for the Aiken County Public Library and a member of the American Association of University Women. She was a member of the sanctuary choir of the First Presbyterian Church in Aiken, where she taught Sunday School, was a Stephen Minister and was very active with the vacation Bible school program. Mrs. Smith was also an avid square dancer. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Aiken or the charity of your choice.
