SALAMANCA - Mr. James Peters, 82, died Sunday (April 6, 2014) at his home following a lengthy illness.Born on Feb. 11, 1932, in Salamanca, he was a son of the late Ralph and Emma Nies Peters. He was married Oct. 26, 1968, in the Congregational Church, to the former Elizabeth Bliesath, who predeceased him.Mr. Peters was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea during the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the 65th Infantry Badge.He was employed as a technician for the former New York Telephone Co. in Salamanca for 35 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post No. 535 and the former BPO Elks Lodge No. 1025.Surviving are a stepdaughter, Linda Haas of Salamanca; a stepson, William (Laura) Lewis of East Amherst; three granddaughters, Susan (Christopher) Magara of Randolph, Megan (Mark) Coulson of Florida and Caitlin Lewis of East Amherst; a grandson, W. Burt Lewis of California; a dedicated grandson, George Haas Jr. of Salamanca; and several nieces and nephews, including Wendy (Peter) Peters-Smith of Olean.He was predeceased by two brothers, Wayne Peters, Donald Peters; and two sisters, Jeannette Redeye and E. Adell Peters.There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held in the O'Rourke & O'Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St., Salamanca, at a time to be announced.
