NORTH BENNINGTON -- Mildred A. Moriarty, 96, widow of Louis D. Moriarty, a former longtime resident of Bank Street Extension, North Bennington, died Thursday, May 3, 2007, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation following a long illness. Born in Brookline, Mass., Aug. 17, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mamie (Aerel) Jaquith. She received her education in the Newport Center school and later graduated from the Lyndon Institute in Lyndonville. Following graduation she taught at the one-room Newport Center School. She enjoyed telling how she road her horse “Trixie” to school every day and would tie it up to the hitching post in front of the school. In the winter she would put Trixie in the neighbors’ barn across the street from the school until it was time to ride her home at the end of the day.Mr. and Mrs. Moriarty were married in Newport on Oct. 25, 1930. In 1941 they moved to North Bennington and Mrs. Moriarty was employed at the Union Carbide Corp. for over 30 years until the time of her retirement. Following retirement she worked weekends for her daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Dick Mattison, as a hostess at the Iron Kettle Restaurant in Shaftsbury where she made many new friends. Mr. Moriarty died Aug. 11, 1994. She was a member of the Stephentown, N.Y., Senior Citizens Club and also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, painting, ceramic work, sewing and working in her flower and vegetable gardens.The family would like to recognize the staff at Rivers Edge Community Care Home for the wonderful care that Mrs. Moriarty received during the past nine months.Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lorraine and Richard Mattison of Shaftsbury and Natalie and Robert Marsh of Bennington; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Margaret Moriarty of Wildwood, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Deborah Schauer of Rancho Palos Verdes, Ca., Richard and Serena Mattison of Shaftsbury, Denise and Jack Rifenburg of Pittstown, N. Y., Michael Moriarty of Albany, N.Y., Thomas and Amy Moriarty of Bennington, Jon and Karen Moriarty of Eagle Bridge, N.Y., Susan and Jerry Griffin of South Carolina; Linore and Michael Keezer of Livonia, Mich., Janet and Bill O’Bryan of Shaftsbury and Tim and Bonnie Marsh of Bennington; 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a niece, a nephew and several cousins. Mrs. Moriarty was predeceased by a granddaughter, Elizabeth Moriarty.The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael A. Demasi officiating.Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the serviceBurial will take place in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made to Pepper Tree Animal Rescue in memory of her best friend and companion, “CoCo,” or to one’s favorite charity through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
