NEW LONDON – Mary McGee died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, peacefully and surrounded by family.She lived an active life devoted to her family, her many friendships, and the New London community, for which she cared deeply.She was born in Toronto, Ontario on Jan. 25, 1931, the daughter of Horace and Mary (McLeod) Drader. She graduated from Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute in Toronto and began working at Wood Gundy, Inc., a leading Canadian brokerage firm. Before leaving to begin a family, she was Assistant to the President of the Montreal branch.Mary married Harry McGee in 1954. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year, which they commemorated with their family in Quebec City. Mary lived in Montreal, Sudbury, Mass., and Toronto before moving to New London permanently in 1994. She and Harry owned a vacation home in Elkins on Pleasant Lake beginning in 1979.Mary was dedicated to the service of others. She volunteered for many years at The Massachusetts Audubon Society in Lincoln, Mass., as well as Emerson Hospital in Concord, Mass., and at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. In New London, Mary was a reader for the first graders at Kearsarge Elementary School, a volunteer at the Friendship Shop in the New London Hospital, and an active member of the First Baptist Church.Nothing was more important to Mary than her family. She was proud of her children, John and Joan, and their many accomplishments, as well as her two beautiful granddaughters, Zoe and Phoebe, both students at New York University.She was committed to her aerobics class at the Mountainside Fitness Center, and the many wonderful members of that group. She also enjoyed baking, preparing for family holidays, and time spent with her bridge club. Her creative and precious "care packages" were treasured by her granddaughters, as were her informative newspaper clippings. Mary was an avid believer in the magic of the handwritten note. Without question, the most meaningful moments of her life were those spent bringing happiness to others.She is survived by her loving husband, Harry D. McGee of North Sutton; two children, John McGee and his wife, Laila Haddad of Charlestown, Mass. and Joan McGee of Denver; two granddaughters, Zoe and Phoebe; her twin sister, Margaret and her husband, Ron Parker of Toronto, Canada; and her nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. at The First Baptist Church of New London.
