Mary Jean "Honey" Washburn, age 87, of Versailles, Missouri, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2010, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, Missouri. She was born March 14, 1922, in Coalinga, California, the daughter of the late Colon Ora and Jean Alexander Brownlie Kilby. She was a graduate of Vallejo High School and attended the University of California Davis. On October 1, 1944, she was united in marriage to Dr. William Otho Washburn at Mare Island Naval Ship Yard, California. Honey was a homemaker and active in many organizations including; the Morgan County Historical Society, Evening Sorosis, Animal Orphanage Inc., Missouri Dental Association Auxiliary, Good Shepherd Nursing Home Guild, Charter Member of the Rolling Hills Country Club, and a long time active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. First and foremost, she was supportive of her children and grandchildren and had time of their activities. Honey had a love for the game of golf, playing several times a week, until recently, at area courses, where she developed many lasting friendships. Her real passion was high school and college sports, attending her first football game when she was less than a year old. Honey started attending MU football games shortly after moving to Versailles after the war, in the 60 plus years, she seldom missed a home game. She was a regular at Versailles football, (even in the rain) and basketball games, with her last game just last week. In 2009, Honey was recognized as Fan of the Year. She is survived by four children, Colon Otho Washburn and wife, Dana of Rogers, Arkansas, William Randall Washburn of Versailles, John Thomas Washburn and wife, Sherry of Springfield, Missouri, and Jean Alexandra Lee of Rogers, Arkansas; eight grandchildren, Alyson Washburn of Dallas, Texas, Krissi Washburn of Rogers, Arkansas, Maegan Washburn of Rogers, Arkansas, Travis Washburn of Charleston, South Carolina, Mackenzie Washburn of Columbia, Missouri, Cory Wheelock of Kansas City, Missouri, Rebekah Lee of Springfield, Missouri, Amy Lee of Springfield, Missouri; one great-grandchild, Wil Lee of Springfield, Missouri; and her special friend, Pat Crowe of Versailles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William Otho Washburn; one daughter, Pricilla Jean; and one sister, Colean Elizabeth Kilby Stanford. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 3, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Versailles. Interment was in the Versailles Cemetery. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Morgan County Historical Society or to the Westminster Presbyterian Church.
