Mary Catherine Keyes, 81, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2013 in Syracuse, NY. She was a resident of Babylon, Long Island for 41 years. Mary, known by most as Maureen, was born on June 18, 1931 in Brooklyn. She attended St John's University and received her bachelor's degree in education in 1953. She was the first recipient in the West Babylon school district to receive the Experienced Teachers Fellowship and attended Hofstra University, where she earned her master's in education in 1967. She began her teaching career at St. Patrick's school in NYC, PS 11 in Brooklyn and Island Park before spending the remainder of her career in the West Babylon School district teaching elementary education at Forest Avenue, Tooker Avenue and Santapogue schools. She retired at 58. In retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband and vacationed to such travel destinations as Hawaii, Colorado, Utah, Italy, Ireland, Germany, Australia, and Singapore. She enjoyed hiking and skiing in the Catskills. She also enjoyed boating and the beautiful beaches of Fire Island. She was active with the Babylon Beautification Association and was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond F. Keyes in 2003; her parents, Anthony and Mary Healy; her brothers, Joseph Healy and Frank Healy. Maureen is survived by her sister, Ambassador Theresa A. Healy of Syracuse; brother in-law, Vincent Keyes of San Rafael, CA; daughters, Pauline (Richard) Warboy of Syracuse, Theresa Murphy of Babylon, Marianne Keyes of East Hampton, Veronica (Anarge) Frangos of Windham, NH; and her son, Raymond E. (Vicki) Keyes of Islip; and grandchildren, Matthew, Nicholas, Collin, Kaitlyn, Beverly, Eddie, Meghann, Victoria, Patrick, Sean, Liam, Rachael, Addison, Amy (Dustin); great-grandchild, Camden of Raleigh, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, February 16, at St. Margaret's Church, Mattydale, NY, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
