Martha W. Anderson CANANDAIGUA - Martha W. Anderson, age 89, formerly of Howell Street, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Highland Hospital, from complications following surgery. She is survived by three sons, John (Janet) Anderson of Lund, Sweden, and Canandaigua, Benjamin Anderson of New York City and Jared Anderson of Victor; two granddaughters, Katherine Anderson of Toronto and Alix (Robert) Kampmeyer of Gastonia, North Carolina; great-grandson, Will Kampmeyer; brother, Edwin Wommer of Bayfield, Colo.; a niece and a nephew; and several grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Anderson in 1974; and brother, Henry Wommer. Martha was born on the family ranch in the San Juan Mountains near Bayfield, Colo. She spent her childhood there and after an accident claimed her father, she lived with her grandmother in the bayou country in Franklin, La. After a period at the University of Denver School of Music, Martha met her husband Jack, of Canandaigua, then a patient at Denver's Fitzsimmons Army Hospital. They married and settled in Canandaigua in 1944. She was a lifelong musician. Martha studied organ, piano and voice; gave piano lessons; and sang in area choirs. She was a faithful member of First Congregational Church, where she sang in the choir for 66 years. Martha was active in Travelers Club and Gleaners Community Kitchen. She volunteered at Sonnenberg Gardens from the day of its founding, first as gardener and guide and later as pianist at the mansion, where her evocative performances were a highlight for many visitors. There will be no calling hours. Her memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 13, at 2 p.m. at First Congregational Church, 58 N. Main St., Canandaigua. A private interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church, 58 N. Main St., Canandaigua, NY 14424.
