ALFRED - Marjorie Louise Johnson, 90, of Alfred and Bar Harbor, passed away peacefully Nov. 4, 2010, at Birch Bay Village Retirement Community's Safe Harbor, Bar Harbor. Marjorie was born Oct. 4, 1920, in Biddeford, the second daughter of Leroy E. and Grace (Cluff) Smith. She attended schools in Kennebunkport and graduated with a post-graduate certificate from Kennebunkport High School in 1938. During World War II, she worked at many jobs, including telephone operator, bookkeeper, stenographer and assistant clerk in the town office of Kennebunk. Upon her marriage in 1946 to Richard Johnson of Alfred, she left the work force, returning after her two girls were grown. She worked as a bookkeeper for SAD 57 for many years and was a notary public. Marjorie loved gardening - maintaining extensive vegetable, flower, fruit and wild gardens. She even ran a tiny greenhouse where she "sold" seedlings to friends and neighbors. An early organic gardener, she taught an adult education course in that topic. An accomplished and creative cook and seamstress, she supplied her family with heirloom quilts, mittens, afghans, clothes and wonderful memories of traditional favorite dishes. She was a passionate game-player and puzzle solver, turning ordinary events into exciting contests. Her love of genealogy seemed to spring from her puzzle-solving spirit. Marjorie was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Kennebunkport, and American Legion Auxiliary, Brown-Emmons Post, Alfred. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Richard H. Johnson, in 2005; and her sister, Eleanor Ruth Wormwood. Marjorie is survived by her two daughters, Sheryl D. Davis and her husband, Richard, of Lamoine and Corlys L. Marzullo and her husband, Thomas, of Newington, Conn.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many beloved nieces, nephews and their families. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Alfred.
