Obituary of Marie-Leslie Jackson


Marie Leslie Jackson, age 92, of Valley Cottage, NY went to be with the Lord on July 13, 2008 after a long illness. She was born on March 1, 1916, in Piermont, NY to the late John and Maud Sisco and was the eldest of nine siblings. She was raised in Sparkill, NY and attended Sparkill Elementary School and Tappan Zee High School. As a child, Marie attended St. Charles A.M.E. Zion Church in Sparkill, NY. She was a member of the Sunday school, Jr. Choir and Christian Endeavor. She was received into full membership in 1929. In 1949 Marie moved to Nyack and joined St. Philip's A.M.E. Zion Church and held many positions. She was President of the Usher Board, Director of the Youth Council, Superintendent of the Bud's of Promise, Leader of Christian Endeavor, Secretary of Women's Home and Foreign Missionaries, Treasure of Stewardess Board, and Treasurer of the Deaconess Board. Also, she was a Class Leader, Conference Worker, Rally Captain, Cheerful Worker, member of the Christian Education Department, Missionary Life Matron, and a member of the Sr. Choir and Church Choir. On the Conference Level she was District Director of Children and District Director of Youth. Marie was a delegate for the New York Annual Conference of the A.M.E. Zion Church numerous times and a delegate to the General Conference on one occasion. Marie had been a member of Rockland Temple #261, Nyack, NY and served every station to Daughter Ruler. In 1976 she received her Past State President honors and in 1978 received her Past Grand Daughter Ruler honors in Atlanta, GA. She had been a member of Rebecca Chapter #26, O.E.S., and served as Worthy Matron. She was very active in the chapter and served in many positions on the local level. Marie was employed as a Nurse's Aide at Nyack Hospital, a Social Worker Aide at the Nyack Community Nursery and as a Job Developer at the Rockland County Guidance Center in Nyack, NY. Marie was preceded in death by her husband Dewey; sisters Alma, Gwendolyn, and Flavia; brothers Ken, Leslie, Arnold and David. She is survived by her son, Russell Sisco of Spring Valley, NY; sister, Eunice Stansbury of Nanuet, NY; daughter-in-law, Veolia Sisco; grandson, Russell Sisco Jr.; great-grand-daughter, Atiana Sisco, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Marie was a wonderful mother, sister, aunt and friend. She was a kind, humble, and gentile spirit with a good heart. She loved God, her family, Church, and life. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but her spirit will always be with us. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 6 to 9 PM at the St. Philip's A.M.E. Zion Church in Nyack. A homegoing service will be held on Friday, July 18, 2008 at 1 PM at the church with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack.
