Margaret-Ellen Stephenson, born in 1912, spouse of Norman Russell, daughter of Arthur and Nina, mother of Keith, Art and Arthur, died on March 29, 2006 at 93 years old. Please consult the obituary here:
RUSSELL: Margaret 1912 - 2006 Margaret Ellen Russell (nee Stephenson) of Drumheller, AB passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at the age of 93 years. Margaret was predeceased by her husband Norman, parents Arthur & Nina Stephenson, brothers George and Marcus, her sister Ruth, and her first grandchild Christopher. Margaret, the oldest child of Arthur and Nina Stephenson, was born at her parents' Verdant Valley home on June 11, 1912. After attending grade school, Margaret graduated from Calgary Normal School and took her first teaching job at Mount Carmel School. She also taught in Verdant Valley and Golden Grain. She took a position at the Drumheller School Division Office and later went on to teach at Drumheller Composite High School. Following her teaching career she founded the hairdressing shop - Marg's Coiffures. Margaret married Norman Russell and they made their first home in North Drumheller and in 1938 their first son Arthur was born. In 1946 Craig was born and the family moved to her Uncle Craig Wilson's farm. In 1948 their third son Keith was born. Margaret enjoyed traveling and visiting with her many friends. She was an avid reader, a career woman and a community person. She did a host of volunteer work including time at the Tyrrell Museum and at the Central School Breakfast program. She was an active member of the Verdant Valley and Dorcas Women's Institute, the UCW and a long time member of the Knox United Church. Margaret served on the Board of Trustees at the Knox United Church for many years, serving as Secretary to the Board. Margaret also served as President of Unit #6 of the United Women's group and as President of the General UCW. Margaret also received a Life-Time Membership pin for her years of involvement with the United Church Women's group at the Knox United Church. Margaret's service to the church was very much appreciated. Margaret leaves to mourn in her passing her sons Art (Maureen), Craig (Janice), and Keith (Roxanne). Her loving grandchildren Trevor (Michelle), Karen (Mike), Jill (Derek), Laura (Larry), Calvin, and Colter. She is survived by her sister Louise Stevenson, sisters-in-law Isabel Bradford and Annie Russell and numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at 2:00 pm at Knox United Church, 195-3rd Avenue East. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society, Suite 400, 320-23rd Avenue SW, Calgary, Alberta, T2S 0J2 or a charity of your choice. Courtney-Winter's Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements. Funeral Services were held at the Church of The Nazarene, on Monday, April 3, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor James Clark officiating. Interment followed in the Carbon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of The Nazarene, Box 2760, Drumheller, Alberta T0J 0Y0.
