Hartman May 25, 2003 Margaret Balinsky Hartman died suddenly and unexpectedly on May 25, 2003, at her home in Amherst, VA. Born in Syracuse, NY, on February 8, 1949, she was a daughter of John A. Balinsky and Arlene Henrietta Behm Balinsky. Margaret graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius High School, received a Bachelors Degree from Vassar College, and earned her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Rochester. Following faculty appointments in philosophy at Tulane University, Knox College in Illinois, and Otterbein College in Ohio, for the last twenty-two years, Margaret was the Chairperson of the Philosophy Department at Sweet Briar College. During her tenure at Sweet Briar, Margaret held leadership positions on many different faculty and administrative committees. Margaret is survived by a son, Leon Hartman, of Bedford; a sister, Sue Balinsky of Charleston, SC; a brother, Jack Balinsky of Pittsford, NY; a sister-in-law, Louise Balinsky of Port Richey, FL; two nieces, Ariel Jackson of Charleston, SC, and Laurette Balinsky of Orlando, FL; and a nephew, Derrick Balinsky of Hornell, NY. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at St. Louis Church, Pittsford, with Bishop Matthew Clark presiding.
