TUSCALOOSA John Mack "Tony" Davis, age 85, of Tuscaloosa, died Sept. 6, 2006 at VA Medical Center. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at Sunset Funeral Home with Father Jerry Deasy officiating and Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.His parents, Dr. Lewis C. and Annie Lou Davis, his brothers, Dr. Jack Davis and Dr. Dudley Davis, and his sister, Annette Davis Dean, preceded him in death.Survivors include his wife, Alta Haynie Davis; daughters, Nan Davis Denton (Howard) and Joanne Davis Willaert (Mark); sons, Carroll L. Davis (Debbie) and Donald C. Davis (Mary); brother, Dr. Joe S. Davis (Marjorie); and grandchildren, Julia E. Davis, John W. Davis, Hunter Davis, and Alta J. Willaert.John was given many loving names. Tony grew up in Gordo. He is also known as Papa by his grandchildren. Tony earned his wings of gold at NAS Pensacola and was assigned to the USS Hornet in World War II. He earned the Navy Cross. He and Alta have lived and raised family in New Orleans, Puerto Rico, Miami and Tuscaloosa. He retired in Miami in 1978 as a supervisor in FAA(ARTC). He enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing. Tony's hobby was growing tomatoes and shitake mushrooms and we all have enjoyed his bounty of fruits and vegetables. After retirement, Tony volunteered at the Missionaries of Charity Mission in downtown Miami when he met Mother Teresa and she gave him the name "John of God".In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Holy Spirit Catholic Church Capital Fund or St. Mark Methodist Church Family Life Center.
