<!-- DisplayFullObituaryText -->Jean Protheroe JohnsonAsheville - Mrs. Jean Protheroe Johnson died in her sleep, age 92, on July 25, 2014. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at 2 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Asheville located at 40 Church Street.Mrs. Johnson was born in New York state in 1921 and grew up in Ohio. She was predeceased by a brother and a sister. She obtained three university degrees and was an educator. On a trip to England she met her future husband, Rev. Charles Earl Johnson, a widower, who was on a sabbatical at Cambridge University; her husband predeceased her in 2007. The couple married in 1973 in England and moved to Asheville that same year along with two of her husband's children. The couple were extremely well suited for each other and it was a close and loving marriage for both of them.After moving to Asheville Mrs. Johnson taught part time at various schools and volunteered in various literacy programs. She gave generously throughout her lifetime to further the higher educational opportunities of disadvantaged groups in this country. Her abiding interest and hobby was her garden and it survives her in its sylvan beauty.Mrs. Johnson was a former YWCA of Asheville Booster and donations in her memory may be made to the YWCA of Asheville, 185 S. French Broad Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801.She is survived by two nieces and a nephew, and her husband's children and their children.
