JOHNSON--Janice. Janice Johnson (nee Platt) (Clarke), died in New York City on November 30, 2014 at age 96 of complications of COPD. A native of Bronx, NY, she also lived in Miami, St. Petersburg, FL, and Decatur, GA. Jan was born March 9, 1918 in New York City to Simon Platt and Alma Louise Broaker. As a lifelong learner, she received a certificate in art from Pratt Institute in 1938, a BA from Eckerd College in 1971, and Master of Fine Arts from New York University in 1988. Her children and friends remember her as kind, intelligent, and generous, sharing her love of art with all she met. As an advertising artist, Jan entered the advertising world on Madison Avenue. After having spent a few years in the Bay area, California during the war, she moved to Miami Beach in the 1940s, became art director of the local newspaper. She married G. Winston Clarke in 1952. In the 1950s and 1960s, she ran Jan Platt Advertising, drawing pen and ink advertising for clients and designing 98 gas stations for Esso. Having married E. Ashby Johnson, professor at Eckerd College, in Gibraltar in 1964, she moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, and became a fine artist in the impressionist style and art instructor, with numerous solo and joint exhibitions. At Suntan Art Center and the St. Petersburg Art Club, she conducted demonstrations of oil painting of still life and was past President at Suntan Art Center. Having lived two years in Taiwan in the 1980s, she became accomplished in traditional Chinese watercolor and had a solo exhibit there and three in the U.S. For her MFA at New York University, Jan had another one-woman show in Manhattan. She learned a computer brailling program in the 1990s and brailled books for the Library of Congress, including the third Harry Potter book. Jan was a world traveler and lived in London, Bangladesh, and Puerto Rico, as well as Taiwan. Jan is predeceased by her husband of 31 years E. Ashby Johnson, her sister Marjorie Dycke Ferrigno of Flushing, NY, her brothers Samuel (Bud) Platt and Bill Platt, both of the Bronx and Miami Beach.
