He graduated from Skaneateles High School in 1981 and Onondaga Community College in 1983. He continued his education and graduated from the licensed practical nursing program at OCM BOCES in 1997. He positively impacted the lives of many patients at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center and SJH Cardiology until he made the difficult decision to retire from nursing in 2010 for health reasons. In addition, he was an active member of Fairmount Fire Department from 1992 through 2001. On June 16, 1963, Jim was born in Ithaca, NY, to Peter and Ruth Anderson.
