Irene (Smith, Briggs) Bell formerly of Union CenterIrene (Smith, Briggs) Bell, 101, formerly of Union Center, died at the Willow Point Nursing Home, Thursday, March 7, 2002. Predeceased by her husbands, Elmer E. Smith, Ralph Briggs and Cecil Bell; a brother, Ray Bennett; a sister, Helen Edson DuBois; a stepson, Marshall Briggs. She is survived by one daughter, Vivian S. Herlihy, Binghamton; two grandsons, Roger M. Shady, Binghamton, David L. Shady, Fla.; one great-grandson, James A. Shady, N.C.; five stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Adelaide Winters, Vestal, Elaine Arellin, Ariz., Caroline and Lester (Red) Marsh, Fla., Helga and Robert Larson, Fla., Marilyn and Richard Evans, Sanitaria Springs; four stepsons and daughters-in-law, Calvin and Dorothy Briggs, Endicott, Robert and Jean Briggs, Endicott, Ralph (Bucky) and Beverly Briggs, Endwell, Lee Edwin and Pam Briggs, Maine; stepdaughter-in-law, Helen Briggs, Owego; stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and family friend, Roger Ireland, Binghamton. She attended Maine Baptist Church. She was a retired IBM Corp. employee, retiring in 1965. A life member of Eastern Star, Chapter 599, Maine. She was an avid bowler and fisherman and was a Republican Committee Women for many years. Funeral services will be held Monday 1 p.m. from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main St., Endicott. The Rev. Paul Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Nanticoke Valley Cemetery, Union Center. The family will receive friends at the memorial home Sunday 2 to 4 p.m. Eastern Star, Chapter 599, will conduct an Eastern Star Service, Sunday 3:45 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in Irene's memory may be made to the Vestal Volunteer Emergency Squad, or the Maine Baptist Church.
