MacDonald, Ian Charles September 17th, 1915 - January 1st 2010 Ian died peacefully in Edmonton after a long and wonderful life. Predeceased by his beloved wife and soulmate Billie, survived by sister Stephanie Laub of B.C., four sons and extended family. He was born at home in the new district of Glenora in Edmonton, in the house his Architect father George Heath MacDonald had built for his bride Dorothea Enid Huestis. After a WWI post to Quebec the family returned to Edmonton and continued to grow, Older brother Bill and Ian joined by Joan, Alan, Stephanie and Eric. He attended Glenora, Westmount and Victoria public schools and began working for the Edmonton Journal in the mid 30's. Enrolling in the U of A, pursuing his interest in singing he also found time to work out at the downtown Jackson Gym. Owned and operated by George Russel and Iris Maud Jackson their beautiful daughter Catherine Wilhelmina (Billie) soon captured his heart and they married in 1938. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1940, serving on many bases across the country, sometimes with Billie and after 1942 Ronald their first son. At War's end Ian left the forces with the rank of Captain, he and Billie settling into civilian life with their second son Dougal (1946). He returned to the Journal and the U of A gaining his Masters in Education and two more sons, Rory (1949) and Devin (1952). Appointed publisher of the Medicine Hat News in 1965, he and Billie joined in the life of their new city, both quietly continuing their charitable works. Ian, a talented singer and Billie a fine artist and tailor got involved with Medicine Hat Musical Theatre enjoying many years of performance and stagecraft. He achieved great success with the "News" and they were able to see the world. After Ian retired in 1980 they returned to Edmonton and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and extended family. Always an adventurer Ian toured the arctic on foot and canoe with son Rory, skiied many mountains and after Billie's death in 1993, canoeing the Nahanni River in the Yukon. He continued to live independantly with his family close by, pursuing his writing projects. A loving husband and generous and caring father, grandfather and great-grandfather he was also a scientist, educator, journalist and humanist. Ian and Billie shared an unstoppable enthusiasm and curiosity for life on this beautiful planet. Proud Canadians and staunch Edmontonians, they are loved and missed. Many thanks to the kind staff of St. Michael's Care Centre who provided a safe and warm home for his last days. The family welcomes charitable giving especially to Hope Mission Edmonton and Hope Foundation of Alberta. Cremation has taken place at Connelly McKinley.
