Obituary of Helen-Corinne-Reynolds Walker

WALKER Helen Corinne Reynolds Walker, 91, died on February 24, 2004, just six weeks after the death of her husband of 70 years, Commander Charles H. Walker, U.S. Navy, Retired. Helen Walker was born August 4, 1912, in Washington, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Bertram Hoyt Reynolds and Isa Ellen Lindley Reynolds, and sister of Beulah Reynolds Windham, Merlin Reynolds, and Mildred Reynolds Betts, who preceded her in death. The family moved to San Diego, California, in the 1920's, where she spent the rest of her formative years. She married Charles Walker in 1933, and the two celebrated their 70th anniversary on November 25, 2003, with family and friends in Jacksonville. Helen Walker was a loving, gentle person of natural grace and wisdom. She spent many years as a Navy wife in World War II and the Korean War during her husband's 29 years of active duty. Like many service wives, she kept up the homefront through hard times, grew a Victory Garden, and didn't know for many weeks whether o r not her husband had survived Pearl Harbor. She is survived by three adoring children and their families: Charlotte Walker (and husband Roland), Stan Walker (and wife Susan) and Marian Walker Stauffer. There are nine grandchildren, David, Rebecca and Rachel Mendez, Libby Walker Davidson, Adam and Eli Walker, and Amity, Courtney and Winston Stauffer; as well as seven great- grandchildren, Ariel, Eli, Sam, Zoe, Cassius, Charlie and Ellie. She is also survived by nephews and nieces, Rev. Al Windham, Margaret Williams, Barbara Seery, Merleen Reynolds, Hans Tanzler, and Harriet Ables, and sister-in-law, Florette Reynolds. Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Monday, March 1, at South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Vincent K. Kolb officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd., S. Please sign the Guestbook at Jacksonville.com
