Evelyn "Evie" O. Davis, 89, died June 27, 2014, after a period of declining health, at The Meadows at East Mountain in Rutland. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 30, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Adolph C. and Margaret E. (Washington) Olsen. Evie graduated from Burlington High School in 1943 and was a member of the first graduating class to receive a bachelor's degree in nursing in 1948 from the University of Vermont. She was a lifelong member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. On the day following graduation, June 23, 1948, she married Richard F. Davis. Evie was the director of the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association and later became the school nurse at Vermont Achievement Center until her retirement in 1990. She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and the St. Anne's Society. Evie will be remembered for her boundless energy. She raised eight children and supported several foster children, always making room for one more. She said her most proud accomplishments were her children and their individual successes in life. She was very involved with the Girl Scouts, the Tamarack Notch Girl Scout Camp and the Catholic Daughters of America Camp, serving as the camp nurse for a number of years. She was always on the go with her many hobbies, including summers spent in Maine, traveling, knitting, sewing, Home Dem and maintaining her friendships with her high school, college and work friends. Surviving are seven of her children, Margaret Gelinas (David) of Burlington, Vermont, Mary Little (Cameron) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Ruth Bruins of East Greenbush, New York, Susan Witt (Ivan) of Gaylord, Michigan, James Davis (Patricia) of Laramie, Wyoming, Judith Carrasco of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and Peter Davis of Kansas City, Missouri; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ann (Davis) and Dr. Emmett Fagan of Rutland; a sister and brother-in-law, Vivienne and Dr. William Dodge of Troy, New York; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard F. Davis, in 1985; a son, Richard C. Davis, in 1998; sons-in-law, Moises Carrasco in 2010 and Gysbert Bruins in 2013. A funeral Mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2014, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church with a reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family would like to express a sincere thank-you to Barb Cagney for all that she did for our Mom through the years. Heartfelt gratitude is also expressed to all the staff of The Meadows, The Pines and Bayada Hospice for all their support over the last 18 months. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired, 60 Kimball Ave., South Burlington, VT 05403-6808; or Meals on Wheels, 80 Belden Road, Suite 6, Rutland, VT 05701.
