She attended public schools in Rutherford Counties and graduated from Kittrell High School. She was the second of nine children born to Lorenzo Dal Williams and W. Bernice McBroom. On April 8, 1939 she married James Harry Carter from Chattanooga, Tennessee. After their marriage, they lived briefly in Spindale, North Carolina, before returning to Chattanooga.She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one son, William R. Carter. She is survived by 2 sisters, Rachel Arnette of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Lois Stapleton of Englewood, Florida, and 1 brother, James C. Williams of Readyville, Tennessee.Mrs. Carter enjoyed talking of her experiences growing up on a farm in a large family. She loved watching sports of all types on television. She especially delighted in cooking for her extended family.She resided in East Ridge for about 50 years. She was a Christian and had been a member of Avondale Baptist Church and East Ridge Baptist Church.She is also survived by sons James H. Carter, Jr. (Phyllis) and Kenneth D. Carter (Pattie) of Chattanooga and daughter-in-law Rosemary B. Carter of Sarasota, Florida. In addition she is survived by 4 grandchildren: Toni C. Westermeyer (Paul) of Great Falls, Montana; Wesley A. Carter (Tonja) of Dayton, Ohio; Jo C. Ibasfalean (Bryan) of Bradenton, Florida; and Christopher A. Carter (Mignon) of Cleveland, Tennessee. She had 6 great grandchildren: Jennifer W. Jablonski of Great Falls, Montana; Ashley W. Shimic of Hawk Springs, Wyoming; Emma and Tessa Carter of Dayton, Ohio; and Kyle and Madison Ibasfalean of Bradenton, Florida. She also had 6 great great grandchildren: Andrew Blackwell; Ethan Jablonski; and Ayden, Beaux, Parker and Owen Shimic.Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday September 16, 2013 at Greenwood Cemetery with Dr. Bill Owens, officiating.Visit www.heritagefh.com to share words of comfort to the family and view the memorial tribute.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations can be made to Ridgedale Baptist Church, Chattanooga, or to the Hematology Helping Hands Fund at Vanderbilt Medical Center, TVC 2665 2220 Pierce Ave. Nashville,TN 37232. A special thank you to Hospice of Chattanooga and a very special thank you to NHC of Chattanooga for the loving care that was given to Mrs. Carter.The family will receive friends 4-8 PM Sunday at Heritage Funeral Home 7454 E. Brainerd Rd.
