ALBANY Elizabeth J. Betty Miller, 101 years young, died Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital. Born six weeks early in Albany, N.Y., to the late William G. and Alida Tegarty Miller, weighing 2.5 pounds with an I can do it attitude that lasted her all her life. Elizabeth spent her entire life in Albany, never marrying but making numerous enduring friendships and touching countless lives. In addition to being devoutly religious, she loved parties, theater and celebrations of all kinds. She never lost her sense of childlike joy at the beauty of the world around her. She worked as an officer manager for the New York Fire Insurance Company, retiring in 1968. She then devoted herself to a career of volunteerism and community service, most notably for St. Peter's Hospital and the Columbiettes. Her volunteer service was recognized and she was awarded the prestigious Jefferson Award for Public Service. She was predeceased by her beloved brothers, William E. Gene Miller and Charles Leo Miller and her sister-in-law, Ines Miller. She is survived by her nephews, J. Michael Miller and his fiancee, Rosemary Harman of West Sand Lake and William Teg Miller and his wife Claire of Schodack; one grandnephew, two grandnieces, two great-grandnieces; a cousin, Miriam Wheeler of Atlantic Beach, Fla; her godchild, Elizabeth Dixon Zimmerman of Watervliet; and many beloved friends. The family extends sincere thanks to the staff of Rensselaer County Hospice, St. Peter's Hospice and to Dr. Robert Irwin and staff, especially Marge Rowland for their care and support. Funeral services Saturday at 8:45 a.m. from the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany thence to St. Vincent de Paul Church, Albany at 9:30 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Friday, 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow the Mass in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. Those wishing to remember Betty in a special way may send contributions to a Christmas Charity, such as Toys for Tots or the Times Union Holiday Fund to honor her love of the Christmas season.
