Edith Mary Harvie June 09, 1909 - February 07, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Atlantic Funeral Home (Halifax) HARVIE, Edith Mary - Champion of seniors, died Monday, February 7, 2005. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service officiated by Rev. Ida Armstrong-Whitehouse, on Sunday, February 13, at 2 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, to celebrate Edith's 95 years of active life. Born in 1909, she was the daughter of the late Mary (Maye) and Lovett Y. Winchester (Digby). Most of Edith's earlier years were spent in volunteer work including Hantsport Women's Institute, Bedford United Baptist Church, where she served on the Board of Deacons, the Finance Committee, and received a Life Membership in the W.M.S. Edith was instrumental in bringing Canadian Pensioners Concerned to Nova Scotia and as its first project co-ordinator, she represented C.P.C. on numerous boards and commissions including the Nova Scotia Senior Citizens Commission, Top Generation Newsletter, New Horizons, Dalhousie University Institute of Public Affairs, Metro Study on Seniors, Live and Learn Programs, Senior Festival Workshops, Senior Citizen Information and Resource Centre, Northwood Centre, was a founding member of Gerontology Association of Nova Scotia and an honorary member of the Registered Nurses Association of Nova Scotia. Edith's strong advocacy for the protection and benefits of the elderly brought recognition from the city of Halifax and the province of Nova Scotia, among them a Community Service Award, Honourable Elder Award, Senior Citizens Commission of Nova Scotia Award, and the 125th Anniversary of Confederation Medal. Two of Edith's greatest satisfactions came when the combined efforts of seniors brought about free drugs for those 65 years old and over, and the licensing of hearing aid dispensers in Nova Scotia. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred; infant son, Frederick; sister, Verge, and grandson, Jeffrey Reeves. Edith will be greatly missed by son, Burton (June), British Columbia; Beth (George) Reeves, Donna (David) Sleigh, Kentville; Charlotte (Wilbur) Starratt, Walton; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren; sister and best pal, Lovell Manuel, Halifax; brothers, Raymond, Smith's Cove; Paul, Dartmouth; many nieces and nephews, and by the many people whose lives have been touched by her along the way.
