Dorothy Washington Lawton, "G-Ma", 90, a retired secretary, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at home on March 26, 2010. She was born on December 21, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois. Services will be Saturday, April 3, 2010, at New Mount Zion Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m., 515 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd. with the Reverend Long officiating. She dedicated her boundless energy to her family, friends, as a Christian, helping those who wouldn't help themselves, and children. Her loving heart, Christian spirit and tender care will be missed by those who knew her and didn't know her. Being a faithful servant, a mother and grandma, reading, teaching, feeding and clothing the homeless was her passion. Dorothy attended Campbell Street Elementary and High School graduating Valedictorian with the class of 1935. Ms. Lawton was predeceased by her mother Edith Isom Washington, two brothers, Lawrence Washington, Sr. (Duboy) and Robert Washington, her ex-husband, Joseph Stephens and husband James Lawton. She was a member of many organizations; Daytona Beach Housing Authority Board for 12 years, started Pinetree Primary Land in Pine Haven Project, Silver Leaf Charity Club and the Red Cross. She was a faithful member of New Mount Zion Baptist Church for 60 years before becoming a faithful member of Tubman King Community Church. She was head of the Homeless Ministry and a Sunday school teacher. As a child of God, mother, grandmother and friend she is indescribable. She was an excellent provider and loved her family, friends, church and the community. She was an angel sent from heaven without wings and now she has found her wings and gone to do what she has always done best, serve the Lord. She leaves to mourn: a daughter, Norma Lewis; two extended daughters, Elaine Barragan, White Plains, NY and Pat Brown, Chicago, IL; eight grandchildren, Cheryl Darby (Johnny), SC, Mark and Kim Lewis, Faye Johnson (Michael), Lori, Ingga and Eric Lewis, all of Daytona Beach and Quana Smith (Sekou), Miami, FL; extended grandchildren, Tina Brown, Chicago, IL, Roberto Barragan (Susan), White Plains, NY; fifteen great grand's; sixteen great-great grand's; extended family members, Patrick family, Oakland, CA, Phillips family, Corpus Christi, TX, Racket family, Boston, MA, Batts family, Columbus, GA, Wright and Wyman family, Daytona Beach; godchildren, Beatrice Thomas and Joslyn Bartley, Daytona Beach, Jacqueline Patrick, Oakland, CA; best friends, Edna, Mable Mary and Nellie; and many more relatives and close friends. The family requests memorial contributions are made to Tubman King Community Church, her church Stewardship.
