Doris Maxey King, 101, passed away December 16, 2009 at The Maples. Doris was born August 5, 1908 in Henning, Minn., to Winfield and Mae (Largent) Hulett. She spent most of her childhood in Decatur, Ill., moving to Springfield in 1925. Doris was a 1926 graduate of Springfield (Central) High School. Doris was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, P.E.O. and Eastern Star. She spent many years as a Girl Scout leader, member of the Sorosis Club and the Static Club. Doris was an accomplished seamstress, knitter, rose grower and birthday cake baker. Her children and grandchildren, as well as many friends, have been blessed with her creations over the years. She was a gracious hostess and enjoyed planning and preparing parties for any occasion. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, H. Carrol King; her parents; one sister; and two brothers. She is survived by two daughters, Sally (Ross) Ausburn, and Alice (Bill) Dodd of Springfield; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons. Visitation will be at 10 a.m., Monday with funeral services following at 11 a.m. in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Burial will follow in Hazelwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. The family wishes to thank Hospice Compassus and the staff at The Maples for their loving care of Doris during her final illness.
