PETERBOROUGH -- Donald Harris, 93, died Dec. 31, 2009. He was born in Ponkapoag, Mass., on June 8, 1916. Mr. Harris, a life-long resident of Peterborough, was a resident of Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Jaffrey, at the time of his death. He was married to the former Ella L. Brush, who died in 2003. Mr. Harris served in the U.S. Army, in the 81st Infantry Division, during World War II. He worked for the Merrimack Farmers Exchange for 29 years, and he and his wife opened the first Sears and Roebuck catalog store in Peterborough. Mr. Harris was a member of the Peterborough Lions Club and The American Legion for more than 50 years, a member of the Peterborough I.O.O.F. and Rebekkas, and the Peterborough Union Congregational Church for more than 60 years. He enjoyed woodworking and camping in his younger years. Mr. Harris was predeceased by his wife and a son, Robert. The family includes two brothers, Mason Harris of Peterborough and Eugene Harris of Ogdensburg, N.Y.; a daughter, Marsha Colburn of Eustis, FL; a son, Norman Harris of Hancock; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. SERVICES: Prior to the service, there will be a private visitation for family members at Jellison Funeral Home. A funeral service is at 1 p.m. Monday in the Union Congregational Church, Concord Street. Peterborough. The Rev. Polly Shamy, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Union Congregational Church.
