SMITH, Diana B. (nee White) Peacefully at her home in Winnipeg, on October 26, 2009. Loving and devoted mother, mother-in-law and grandmother to Brian (Jane) and children Alexander and Madeline of Ottawa, Gregor (Kathy) of Kingston, and Colin (Jennifer) and children Cameron and Gillian of Toronto. Diana was predeceased by her beloved son Tony in 1973 and husband Desmond in 1984 and is survived by her younger brothers Gavin White (Robin) of St. Andrew's, Scotland and Douglas White of Kingston. Diana was born in Montreal in 1925, the daughter of Donald A. White and Adeline Waddell Mactier. She attended Miss Dunlop's School and The Study in Montreal before boarding at Netherwood in Rothesay, New Brunswick. While at Netherwood, she served as Head Girl where she reported that her duties included cutting the pie evenly at dinner. She was also the recipient of many academic prizes before graduating in 1942. Summers were spent at cottages and resorts in Bitterford Pool and Kennebunk Beach, Maine, and Ste-Agathe and Tadoussac, Quebec. In 1942 following a year at McMaster University in Hamilton, she began her accountancy training initially with Lee and Martin in Halifax and subsequently with McDonald Currie in Montreal. She became a Chartered Accountant in 1952. During her time in Montreal Diana was an avid skier, golfer and sailor. She met her future husband while crewing on a Lightning at the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club. They subsequently moved to Winnipeg in 1957 where they raised their family in Tuxedo and River Heights. In the early 1960s they built a cottage on Clearwater Bay at Lake of the Woods near Kenora, Ontario. Diana enjoyed many summers there sailing, walking her welsh terrier Morgan on Beau Jess Road and teaching her children to love nature. Throughout her 52 years in Winnipeg Diana provided unwavering service to the church and to community organizations that included Middlechurch Home, The Winnipeg Symphony, the Manitoba Conservatory of Music, the Women's Musical Club, the Antique Arts Club, the Anglican Diocese of Rupert's Land, and St. George's Church, Crescentwood. A memorial service will take place at St. George's Church, 168 Wilton St. at Grosvenor Ave. on Monday, November 2nd at 3:30 pm.
