Obituary of Daniel Kelly


DURHAM - Daniel Kelly died at home on November 25, 2012. The son of Daniel and Helen (Kemp) Kelly, he was born on January 7, 1938. He grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn Prep in 1955 and Yale in 1959. He received his Ph.D. in European History from the University of Wisconsin. In 1964 to 65 he worked as a United States Foreign Service officer and was stationed in Washington, D.C. and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. From there, he went to teach modern European history at New York University's Washington Square College. He married Wendy Korbel in 1966 and they settled in Manhattan. The following year he joined the history faculty of York College of the City University of New York, where he taught until he retired in 1996. At his wife's urging, he moved to Durham, a town he knew well, in 2005. He is the author of James Burham and the Struggle for the World, and the forthcoming Living on Fire, a biography of Brent Bozell. His wife survives him, as do his son, Nicholas, daughter-in-law Rebecca, and granddaughter, Allison. Also surviving him are his brother, Andrew and his sister, Ellen.
