Betty Jean (Jackson) Davis Utica Betty Jean (Jackson) Davis, 70, of Utica, also known as "Mama Bet", was called home March 31, 2009, after a brief illness, in the Heritage Health Care Center. Mrs. Davis was born August 11, 1938, in Haliwaker, AL, to the late Vernon and Edwina Cook-Jackson. Betty was educated in the Muscogee County School System in Columbus, GA. She also attended the Utica School of Commerce and the Manpower Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) School. She later was employed by St. Luke's Memorial Hospital for seven years and received much joy working for the Utica City School District. She was a past member and assistant Daughter Ruler of the Harriet Tubman Temple #421 I.B.P.O.E. of W. and Gus L. Atkins Military Police Unit #57, both of Utica. Mama Bet was also an active community worker. She volunteered for the American Heart Association, Utica Boilermaker and various electoral campaigns for the community leaders. Her hobbies included cooking and traveling. Mama Bet truly loved serving God, her church, family and friends. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing at different churches in the Utica, Rome and Syracuse areas. Her greatest passion was singing in the group called "The Metrolites". She was always extending a helping hand, being at the beck and call when and wherever she was needed. Mama Bet will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her. She leaves to mourn and cherish her memories, her daughters, Wilhemina and Sharon Davis, of Utica, Terry (Jesse) Davis-Martin, of Sanford, NC, and Tabatha Davis, of Columbus, GA; sister, Martha Morris, of Utica; brothers, Vernon (Deland) Jackson and Curtis (Mattie) Franklin, of Columbus, GA, and Murray (Christine) Eddings, of Detroit, MI; brother-in-law, Charles (Mary) Owens, of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Gregory, Curtis, Veronica, Anthony, Reginald, Tasha, Gena, Leola and Jam're, of Utica, Nelson Davis, III, of Savannah, GA, and Ashley and Michael Cannon, of Columbus, GA; six great-grandchildren; Godson, Leroy "Plug" Winston; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and special friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Curtis Davis; her parents; siblings, Julia Ann Owens, Francis Harris, and Barbara and Bobby Jackson; niece and nephew, Tasha and Damian Eddings; and mother-in-law, Ethellen "Madear" Davidson. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at T. Revels-Gibson Funeral Chapel. Funeral Wednesday, 11 a.m., at St. Pauls Baptist Church, 219 Leah St. Rev. Robert Williams will officate.
