Obituary of Barbara-S. Smith


Barbara Sawhill Smith passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, January 13, 2008. Beloved wife of the late Richard G. Smith, daughter of the late Ray V. and Josephine Sawhill, and sister of the late Ray V Sawhill Jr., she is survived by her sister, Jane H. Sawhill, of Hastings-on-Hudson, two sons and their wives, R. Bram and Barbara M. Smith of Scarsdale and D. Gilbert Smith and Aileen of New Zealand, four grandchildren and nine nieces and nephews. She was born on May 22, 1921 in Lakewood, Ohio and moved to Pelham, NY in high school. She graduated from Furman University in SC and served in the WAVES (Navy) during WWII. Devoted to her family, she was very active in her grandchildren's lives, including yearly trips to NZ. Friendships were very important to her, were made wherever she lived, and fostered to last a life time. A loving person, she was the First Reader in the Christian Scientist Church and President of the Manor Club, both in Pelham where she lived for 46 years. Visiting hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Wednesday, January 16 at the Bennett Funeral Home in Scarsdale, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to High Ridge House, 5959 Independence Ave., Riverdale, NY 10471. EDWIN L.
