SHARON - Barbara Celeste Wilson (née Wentworth), age 85, daughter of Fuller Wentworth and Hazel Sparrow Wentworth, passed away on Friday, Apr. 3, 2015 at Pheasant Wood Center in Peterborough, with her daughter by her side.Barbara was born on Nov. 17, 1929 in Belfast, Maine, where she completed her K-12 schooling. She attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine and graduated in May 1952 with a Bachelors Degree in English literature. She earned a Fulbright scholarship to pursue graduate studies at the University of Manchester in Manchester, England, where she was trained in the oralist approach to deaf education (i.e. lip reading in lieu of signing). Upon her return to the United States, Barbara taught at Clarke School for the Deaf in North Hampton, Mass. for seven years. While working and serving as a "house mother" at the boarding school, Barbara was set up on a blind date with the man who became the love of her life, John Moran Cochran Wilson Jr. (décès) from Nova Scotia, Canada. The couple married in the summer of 1961 and moved to Peterborough, and later to Sharon. In these townships, Barbara was an active volunteer in the local school system as well as being on the checklist for the Town of Sharon and for the Serendipity Shop (aka, "The Dip") of All Saints Parish.Barbara will always be remembered as an elegant, meticulous, warm and gentle lady with an abundance of patience and kindness. She was an avid reader, gardener, and knitter; a world traveler; and a true stickler for prescriptive grammar and the canonical pronunciation of words. Stoic, independent and resilient, Barbara earned the affectionate distinction of being a "tough old bird." Barbara is survived by her daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Jean Meddeb and husband, Ricardo Morcate of Forest Hills, N.Y.; her son, David Cochran Wilson and wife, Robyn Wilson of Bradenton, Fla.; her granddaughter (and namesake), Gabriela Celeste Morcate (22 months old); her grandson, Camden Cochran Wilson (12 years old); her step-granddaughter, Heather Mackenzie-Beadles and her son, Jason.Barbara was predeceased by her brother-in-law, the Rev. William C. Wilson, but survived by his sister-in-law, Marilyn C. Wilson of Salem, Mass.; two nephews, Robert and Charles and a niece, Josephine Peterson; two cousins, Clayton H. Wentworth of Freedom, Maine and Dr. Bernard C. Wentworth of Madison, Wis.; and her 20-pound putty cat (aka, "Fat Cat") of Peterborough. There will be a memorial service on Sunday, Apr. 12, 2015 at 12:30 pm at All Saints Parish in Peterborough. The family would prefer memorial donations be made to: Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech - North Hampton Campus. http://www.clarkeschools.org/donate.
