William T. Willoughby -->William T. Bill Willoughby, 80 years old, native of Montgomery County, Ky., passed away Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, after a battle with heart disease. A graduate of Camargo High School, Class of 1947, Bill served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, afterward attending Morehead State University, Class of 1957. Mr. Willoughby began his post-graduate education at Murray State University and earned a master's degree in Education at Boston University. Some of his greatest accomplishments came in his career over four decades as an educator and coach. His career included teaching in Middleton, Ohio, Boston University, Nellingen and Munich American Schools Germany and over 30 years in Quincy at Atlantic Middle School and North Quincy High School. Though notorious for his disciplinary binks, he was always one of the most popular educators to both students and faculty. As a teacher, coach and man, Bill's positive influence had been spread across the globe. Mr. Willoughby was the winningest tennis coach in Quincy history. Once while vacationing in California, a former student from decades earlier in Germany saw him and enthusiastically flagged him down. Hailing from Appalachia, Bill's impact was widespread. All who knew him were forever touched by his wisdom and joie de vivre. As Christian Terrell, a proud member of the Merchant Marines, stated, "He was by far the most influential teacher I ever had. He was a cornerstone in my life; I am the man I am today, because of him. Mr. Willoughby was active in his hometown of Braintree, where he was well-known for his gardening skills. He was a trend setter, helping create the Braintree Recycling committee well before going green was cool. Bill was on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Cerebral Palsy Association, a prominent member of the Braintree Men's Club and was involved with the First Presbyterian Church in Quincy. Mr. Willoughby was additionally active in Atlanta at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Willoughby was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Mayme Willoughby. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Donna Adams Willoughby; sons, William T. Willoughby Jr. of Atlanta and Don Joel Willoughby of Lexington, Ky.; daughter, Amy Wilson; son-in-law, Mark Wilson; beloved grandchildren, Spencer, Skye and Willow Wilson of Atlanta; brothers, Allen Willoughby of Mt. Sterling, Ky., Carl Hord Willoughby of Alexandria, Ky.; and sister, Lona Kemplin of Wilder, Ky. Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. at A.S. Turner Funeral Home, in Decatur, Ga. Funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at 3:30 in The Little Chapel at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, Emory University. A memorial service in the Braintree area will be held later at a later date.
