William Newton (Newt) Pitts was born Oct. 20, 1941, in Florence, and died at Helen Keller Hospital on Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, after a brief illness.He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Claire Sanford Pitts; daughters, Barbara Sanford (Robin) and Saidi Elizabeth Pitts; and brother, Sam Pitts (Karen), of Dallas, Texas.Mr. Pitts was predeceased by his daughter, Elizabeth Anne Pitts; parents, Lally H. Pitts and Isaac Newton Pitt; and brother, Jim Pitts.Mr. Pitts was a graduate of Coffee High School, where he was a quarterback for the varsity football team. He graduated from Florence State College and The University of Alabama Law School.Mr. Pitts was a resident of Sheffield. He practiced law for 42 years, beginning his practice with Jack Reed in Tuscumbia in 1967. He was a member of the Alabama State Bar and served as a Chapter 13 bankruptcy trustee from 1970 until he retired in August of this year. He also served as judge of the Sheffield City Court for many years. Mr. Pitts was devoted to his family and his profession. He enjoyed golfing and was an avid Alabama football fan.Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. A graveside service will be at Sheffield Oakwood Cemetery at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009.The family wants to thank Dr. Deal and Dr. Carmichael, as well as the nurses at Helen Keller Hospital for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to your favorite charity.Morrison Funeral Home, of Tuscumbia, is directing.
