Mr. William J. Harrington, age 57, died Thursday December 9, 2010 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Nancy (Dyba) Harrington. A lifelong resident of Swampscott, he was the son of the late William and Vera (Mangini) Harrington. A 1972 graduate of Swampscott High School, he had also attended Northeastern University. He had worked for many years for Metropolitan Insurance Company and Prudential Financial Services. Bill was an outstanding baseball player from Swampscott, known as one of the finest pitchers to come out of Swampscott High School. He had played for Swampscott High, Swampscott Legion, Salem State, the Boston Park League, the Inter City League, Augustine Athletics and especially for St. Johns in the North Shore Baseball League. He had played competitively up until 1997, mastering the knuckleball over many years. In 1972 his performance as a pitcher attracted the St. Louis Cardinals who pursued him for their organization, however, a basketball injury to his shoulder ended his hopes of a career in professional baseball but did not hinder his love of the game or prevent him from being a dominant pitcher in the leagues he played in. In addition to his love of baseball, he and his wife enjoyed white river rafting in West Virginia, Tennessee, and Maine, hiking Yosemite National Park, Zion National, and Bryce Canyon National Parks and skiing and ice skating. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister Marguerite Cunningham, of Swampscott, a son Amos Ettore and his wife Sally of Malden, two grandchildren, Josh and Juliana Ettore of Malden, and three nieces Deborah Nokes and her husband Richard of Rumford, Maine, Sharon Cunningham and her husband Barry Rosenthal of Swampscott, and Marie Sacco and her husband Steve of Salem, NH. His Funeral was held on Monday at 9 a.m. from the Solimine Landergan and Richardson Funeral Home 67 Ocean St. (RTE1A), Lynn. Visiting hours were Sunday 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the ;(function() { var adKeyValue = 't='; adKeyValue+= escape('clio=ACS'); adKeyValue += escape('&cobrand=wickedlocal-marblehead'); adKeyValue += escape('&linktext=American Cancer Society'); adKeyValue += escape('&linkurl=https://www.cancer.org/involved/donate/donateonlinenow/Legacy/index?dn=mem&fn=William&ln=Harrington'); adKeyValue += escape('&fn=William'); adKeyValue += escape('&ln=Harrington'); var adClkUrl = 'http://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/jump?iu=/423686928/prod/obit-aff/obit-standard/clio-inline-1&' + adKeyValue + '&sz=1x1&c=359266514'; var adImpUrl = 'http://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/ad?iu=/423686928/prod/obit-aff/obit-standard/clio-inline-1&' + adKeyValue + '&sz=1x1&c=359266514'; document.write("<a href='" + adClkUrl + "' target=_blank>American Cancer Society<" + 'img' + " src='" + adImpUrl + "' style='width=1px; height=1px; display:inline;' /></a>"); }()); 30 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701.
