William Edward (Bill) Todd, Col., U.S. Air Force (Ret.) passed away April 30, 2009, in his 92nd year at Greenspring Village, Springfield, Virginia. He was born in New Eagle, Pennsylvania, the son of Bracken C. Todd and Olive Anderson Todd and spent his early years in Monessen, Pennsylvania. Bill was married January 25, 1940, to Reba Myers Lyell at St. Johns Episcopal Church, Wilmington, N.C. His beloved wife of 68 years passed away March 30, 2008. Col. Todd graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1938. While a 2nd Lieut. in the U.S. Army Reserve, he worked for two years for the Cape Fear Terminal Company in Wilmington, N.C. before applying and being called to active duty in 1940. He served as an Artillery Officer with the U.S. Army Field Artillery until 1941 when he entered pilot training receiving his wings in 1942. During World War II, he served as an instructor pilot in B-25s and in the Persian Gulf Command as a Test Pilot for P-39, P-40 and P-47 fighters for delivery to the Soviet Air Force. After his wartime service, he remained in the U.S. Air Force serving in Air Target Intelligence assignments at the Pentagon and SAC Headquarters and then as Director of Intelligence Headquarters 2nd A.F. His flying assignments included Director of Operations of the 91st Reconnaissance Wing, Director of Operations and Vice Commander 19th Bomb Wing. Other assignments were as Base Commander in Morocco, Missile Site Activation Task Force Commander, and Deputy for Systems Management at Aeronautical Systems Division. He retired in 1969 and became President of Broach Systems, Inc. and later worked in real estate and insurance in Ormond Beach, Florida. Beloved father of Katherine Lyell Todd Royal and Col. (Ret. U.S.A.F.) William Bracken Todd, Bill is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. His grandchildren are Jennifer L. Royal, Jeffrey T. Royal, Kevin B. Royal, Emily R. Todd, Rachel E. Rieckhoff, William Bracken Todd, Jr., Brittane L. Todd and John M. Todd. Bill will also be remembered fondly by his daughter-in-law, Kathleen K. Todd and son-in-law, Jackson W. Royal. He is also survived by a nephew, Scott Todd, and two nieces Laura Lyell Farmer and Ginger Lyell. An Episcopal service and Columbarium inurnment with Full Military Honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on July 10, 2009, at 9:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Virginia Military Institute Foundation, Lexington, Virginia.
