WILLIAM E. TOMPKINS SENECA FALLS - William E. Tompkins, 87, passed away Monday, November 10, 2008, at his home in Seneca Falls, NY, surrounded by his family. The family will receive friends at the Sanderson-Moore Funeral Home, 32 State Street, Seneca Falls, 13148 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 13th. There will be a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 14th. Memorial contributions may be made to the Red Jacket Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 622, Seneca Falls, NY 13148. Bill was one of ten children born July 28, 1921 in Newfield, NY to the late Olin and Grace Tompkins. He married Beulah Hine on August 20, 1944 and they just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Bill graduated from Newfield High School and began working for the NYS Parks Commission in 1946 as a seasonal laborer at Robert H. Treman State Park. He became a Park Caretaker at the same park in April of 1947 where he served until April 1951 when he became Superintendent of Newton Battlefield Reservation near Elmira, NY. In November 1958 he became Superintendent of Cayuga Lake State Park where he remained until his retirement in 1985. During his 39 years of service he received a Certificate of Appreciation in 1985 from the Seneca County Sheriff's Department for outstanding and exemplary service to the people of Seneca County and in 1990 the NYS Huttleston Award for excellence within the State Council of Parks. He was a lifetime member of the Red Jacket Fire Department where he served as Fireman and Commissioner for several years. During that time, the Bridgeport Fire District of Seneca Falls and Seneca County Sheriff Department gave Bill an Award for Outstanding Service to his community. Bill was also a member of the Elks for 27 years. Bill's greatest joy in life was his wife and family. He is survived by his wife, Beulah; and six children, Clifford (Lisa) Tompkins of Mission Viejo, CA, Daniel (Gail) Tompkins of Geneva, Bruce Tompkins and Mark Tompkins of St. Cloud, FL, Dale (Maureen) Tompkins of Concord, NC, and his only daughter, Dawn (Reginald) DeRue of Seneca Falls; seventeen grandchildren, Tonia (Marc) Tanguay of Mission Viejo, CA, Scott Tompkins of Irvine, CA, Cheri (Robert) Walsh of Brookly, Heather Tompkins of Geneva, Jeffrey (Julia) Tompkins of Fort Collin, CO, Jessica (Mark) Jones of Rochester, Stephanie (Edward) Kelm of Hamburg, Colin DeRue of Buffalo, Mark (Christine) Tompkins and Jill Tompkins of Seneca Falls, Sandra Tompkins of Rochester, Curtis and Danielle Tompkins of Ithaca, Sonnie Tompkins and Megan Anderson of Mission Viejo, CA, Timothy (Sarah) Olsen of Charlotte, NC, and Christopher (Sian) Olsen of Southington, CT; nine great-grandchildren, Madison and Ryan Tanguay, Liam Walsh, Declan Tompkins, Jayden Anderson, Noah, Hannah, Carter and McKenna Olsen. He has three surviving siblings, brothers, Lawrence and Marshal Tompkins; and sister, Nellie Taber. He was predeceased by brothers, James, John and Howard Tompkins; sisters, Bertha Coombs, Mary Rumsey and Virginia Allen. Bill has many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
