Obituary of William-Davis Willoughby


William Davis Willoughby, age 65, a longtime resident of Crestview, Fla., passed away Nov. 9, 2008, at his home.He was born on Oct. 12, 1943, in Centerville, Miss., to Bennett and Mamie Davis Willoughby. He graduated from Liberty High School in Liberty, Miss., and entered the University of Southern Mississippi on an athletic scholarship. While at USM, Will played varsity football and was a member of the "M Club."Upon graduation from USM with a degree in geography, he came to Okaloosa County to teach and coach for 10 years. While coaching, Will was named 1974-1975 Class 2-A Track Coach of the Year for both Okaloosa County and the State of Florida. He then owned and operated a paint contracting business until a stroke disabled him in 1989. Will loved the outdoors and was an accomplished quail hunter and fisherman.Will was preceded in death by his parents, Bennett and Mamie Davis Willoughby.He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Caroline; his daughter, Beth and her husband Rick Kelly of San Dimas, Calif.; daughter, Rebecca and her husband Creede Mansell; and two grandchildren that he adored, Jacob and Grace, all of Canton, Miss. He is also survived by his brother, Ben and his wife, Tommie Willoughby; and his sister, Celeste Wathen, all of Hattiesburg, Miss.A time of visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home.Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the funeral home with the Rev. Tom Collins officiating. Burial will follow at Liveoak Park Memorial Cemetery in Crestview.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church Building Fund or American Heart Association.   Arrangements are entrusted to Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home, Crestview.
